The History of Musical Boxes
The Origins of the music box and its manufacture as we know it today can be traced back to around 1796 when a swiss watchmaker named Antoine Favre, started to produce small musical mechanisms to incorporate into watches. Other makers soon copied these and developed them, and so, the music box business was born. Over the years very elaborate and beautiful musical boxes have been manufactured by companies all over the world, many have survived into preservation as a tribute to the men and women who made them.
Today a small number of select companies still produce musical box movements and music boxes, together with other gift items, all using the similar plucked comb movement that Antoine Favre is attributed with developing.
